Norwegian Knives from Haugrud

"Håndverk med lange tradisjoner"

The Norwegians want their knives to look good, and work very well. The patterns have been refined over the last thousand years or so, and tend toward elegant, functional, simplicity. Most of the styles are very traditional, and many will suit the reenactor very well.

Arne Haugrud knives are formally elegant, but fully functional. The blades are high carbon stainless steel, 12c27 alloy hardened to 58 - 59 on the Rockwell scale. As is customary with Norwegian knives, they are delivered shaving sharp. Each comes with a gift box and has a space on the sheath for engraving.

Birkenbeiner

The Birkenbeiner is named after a powerful group of warriors from the 12th and 13th centuries. The name literally means "birch legs", and comes from their practice of wrapping their legs in birch bark by way of armor. The finely cast pewter mounts on the knife and sheath are decorated with motifs from this period. The pattern embossed in the leather of the sheath reflects the leg wrap of these warriors. The handle is stabilized curly birch. The knife is supplied in a gift box complete with a sharpening stone. Truly, this is knife fit for a warrior chief.
The knife is just over eight inches long, and the blade is about four inches.
The price is $200.

Myllargutten

The Myllargutten has engraved pewter at the bolster, pommel and sheath. It is very elegant and just large enough to be useful. I like this one a lot, and it's the one I would chose for myself. If I had a larger hand, I would take the Birkenbiner.
The blade is 3 ¼ inches, the knife is 7 ¼ inches.
The price is $175.
